All of the hot contrafactual history is about what if Germany won WWII? I love that stuff — Man In the High Castle, SSGB, Fatherland etc. But in many ways the most interesting question is, “What if World War One had never been fought?” 1/2

It's not a question of the manpower. Like Britain in 1775-83, USA in Reconstruction or Vietnam or Afghanistan, it's a question of will. Does the more weaker party have the will to continue the fight until the stronger quits.

The British never put more than 30,000 troops in the US 1775-83, usually many of whom were Hessians or local loyalists. Wellington commanded 200,000 men a few decades later.
