The Church has always taught that the state has the right to inflict the death penalty. Now, it is not considered OK in the current historical circumstances, but it doesn't fall under the same immutable, intrinsic evil category as abortion.

Far back enough that we can't exactly date each one for comparison. But an alternative title of the Didache is "Teaching of the 12 Apostles". It's also in Epistle of Barnabas & others when the Church's position on capital punishment was, "don't throw us to the lions."
