My ideal Republican presidential candidate is, as always, a 2-term governor not born to wealth or privilege. Since 1952, we've run only one candidate who fit that description. The Democrats have also only run one in the same period.

I think it was much easier for Trump to make that jump having not held office before. One ad about Hogan calling abortion “legally settled” and he’s done for. He’s already not exactly beloved by the base.

Romney did it. But a complete about-face on abortion & multiple other issues would probably do irreparable damage to Hogan's brand.
