Who was the first death of a celebrity you followed/cared about? Probably Thurman Munson, who died in Aug 79, a month after my grandfather; I was 7. I remember when Elvis & Bing Crosby died in Aug 77, John Wayne in June 79, but didn't care about their work then.https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/1300142562037166085 …

The first big deaths I remember are the Challenger crew. Though not really celebrities. I guess the first famous death that hit me was Len Bias.

Michael Conrad, one of the stars of "Hill Street Blues," who died in 1983, during the run of the series. For some reason, I really felt that as a loss.

Not sure which ones hit me the hardest. Maybe Clarence Clemons & Tom Petty.

You outlined memories similar to my own. Duke/Bing/PVI big but expected; JP1 a shock for us RCs. But the Thurman Munson news was an earthquake, as he was still young. Not a US celebrity, but I’d add the Mountbatten bombing. My guess is that’s how the new Crown season will start.

Mountbatten lingers on the edge of my consciousness.
