It would be political malpractice to back out. I'd be furious if a Republican took that stance instead of getting in the ring.https://twitter.com/LPDonovan/status/1299028929681002496 …

If "don't legitimize Trump by debating him" becomes a Dem refrain, puts Biden in a weird position. He already committed to three, which was notable because Rs have staked a lot on a idea that he won't show. Backing out not really an option.

Biden just said on CNN he won’t back out of the debates and he’s capable of “fact checking” Trump himself from the stage.

Watching CNN/MSNBC live chyron these debates is going to be a hoot.

I seem to recall in 2016 the Dems staked a lot on the "peacefully and graciously accept the results of the election"—right up until the moment that was memory-holed.

You know the inevitable narrative would be that, in fact, Trump was afraid to debate Biden. There is also “scheduling issues” and “safety due to COVID.” All will suffice for a lot of people.

It would be as fraudulent as handing him the nomination even though his mental decline has been obvious since January. (And it's quite possible it was obvious sooner than that to someone who was observing the candidates more closely than I.

Backing out of the debates would turn whispers about #JoeBiden’s mental capacity into screams. The #BidenHarris2020 campaign would have to be convinced that #Biden2020 would make a fool of himself to make this move. I think #Biden hears those whispers and wants to respond.
