Replying to @ZaidJilani @Heminator
First one, period. I don't believe there was ever a debate between general election candidates before 1960. Lincoln & Douglas debated when they were running for Senate.

Every debate I’ve seen has been essentially a joint press conference. Debates have had “moments” (GHWB looking at watch in 92, Dukakis coldly describing hypo of wife murder, Reagan’s shaky first and steady second debate in 84, Ford & Poland), but have they ever been substantive?

Maybe the Cheney-Lieberman debate?

Replying to @baseballcrank @tedfrank and
Biden-Ryan, too, IIRC. But "substantive" and "memorable" may not correlate, and who among us wants to re-read the transcripts?

Biden-Ryan consisted mainly of Biden shouting down Ryan to prevent a substantive exchange.
