First one, period. I don't believe there was ever a debate between general election candidates before 1960. Lincoln & Douglas debated when they were running for Senate.

Which actually shows how Lincoln was a century ahead of his time. The national newspaper reports on those debates made him a national figure. That would have been technologically impossible 25 years earlier. First POTUS made by using the media.
