He also traveled the whole 17 miles to Kenosha to help clean up graffiti earlier in the day. So while the broad version of vigilante may technically fit, the intended meaning for people using the word in this situation is incorrect.

I don't think acting as a defensive presence would be considered vigilantism. The only criminal acts you care about are those perpetrated against you or the property you guard.
