Meanwhile, I'm pleased to see a few conservative publications devoting some resources to fact-checkers: not ideological "our side is always right" folks, but actual fact-checkers who do research & analysis. Much needed, no matter which side folks are on.

I think it does. This is why the GOP establishment has had such a filthy name in recent years, in part. (Ignoring the base on immigration was the other biggie, but people noticed the grift too) Not that the alternatives are better, but they can sometimes look better.

Might be because actual conservatism is anathema to people with money. Control, regulation, gatekeeping, limiting competition... that's where the moneymaking opportunities are at and what the most wealthy people want. The idea of more freedom for the serfs is horrifying to most.
