I think that's too easy an answer and avoids introspect about what conservatism now represents to a lot of people. I lived through a time when this was not true, so it's not a straight line from the 1950s and it's not (entirely) because of Red Professors.

Trump & his faction have made this worse; on that we agree. He is frequently self-defeating. But I lived through the W years & saw how these institutions reacted to McCain & Romney. It did not all start with Trump.
