1. Aren't most people who pronounce it Ka-MAL-a rather than KA-ma-la (just from reading how it's spelled) simply assuming the same pronunciation as O-BAM-a? Nobody says OB-a-ma. I had the pronunciation wrong by default when I was first reading her name, until I heard it spoken.

I’ve read to pronounce it like “Comma-la”. And yes, Tamil. Her mother’s name has a similar pronunciation.

It's Tamil, but has been used in Africa, where it inflects differently. Once people know how to pronounce it, they should try to do so, but mistakes happen. Some intuit the other pronunciation, just as a non-native English speaker might assume McLaughlin is "mick-laff-lin".
