1. Aren't most people who pronounce it Ka-MAL-a rather than KA-ma-la (just from reading how it's spelled) simply assuming the same pronunciation as O-BAM-a? Nobody says OB-a-ma. I had the pronunciation wrong by default when I was first reading her name, until I heard it spoken.

5. As a number of people are noting, Kamala is an Indian - or rather, Tamil - name, not an African one. Which was new to me this week; I had not looked into it before. Tamil names are more outside my own experience. There's always more to learn about people & peoples.
