2. I think I have a pretty broad, but obviously not comprehensive, instinct for names from different parts of the world. I assumed from reading Kamala that it's an African name that emphasizes the middle syllable, but I confess I never looked that up.

5. As a number of people are noting, Kamala is an Indian - or rather, Tamil - name, not an African one. Which was new to me this week; I had not looked into it before. Tamil names are more outside my own experience. There's always more to learn about people & peoples.

Central Africa and India aren't super similar linguistically. That said, people can be entirely forgiven for not knowing how a name is pronounced initially (glares at the Polish). It is rude and arguably racist to intentional mispronounce a name once you know how it is said.

Charity presumes a person who mispronounces a name after learning how it is pronounced continues to do so out of an inability (due to habits of language developed over many years) to pronounce it correctly.
