There's 3 cases for voting 3d party.
1-You truly believe both choices equally bad, indifferent to who wins.
2-You're a true libertarian or some such who can't ideologically match either party.

The real politics is in the party. Which is a problem if you are a "leave me alone libertarian". Because party meetings are the last thing you want to be doing.

It would be interesting if a state put "None of the Above" as a ballot option, and if it received a plurality, the state would not submit votes to the EC.

I think of candidates a bit like ABA rates judges- there's Not Qualified, (minimally) Qualified and Well Qualified. For example, in context of VP I'd rate Abrams NQ, Harris Q, Warren or Rice WQ. (But obviously these are matters of opinion).
