Rudy & Zell might be the best multi-time convention speakers I've ever seen who were never nominees. Reagan in 1976 & Ted Kennedy in 1980 are both legendary runnerup speeches, but I'm not old enough to remember them live.

Of course, counting nominees, the most legendary of all convention speeches was William Jennings Bryan's Cross of Gold speech in 1896, which permanently raised the bar for what people expected from a convention speech.
