In April’s contribution to the timeline, Boston shows the hell up for work, hair metal says hi, Joe Jackson does late Cold War, a Husker goes solo, the Vandals represent HB, The Cure thankfully make their May contributions lighter, and Japanese metal may just steal the show.

And oh yeah, that Tom Petty record. Do yourself a favor, when “Feel a Whole Lot Better” comes on, slap on the cans, crank it loud, and hear how luscious that recording is. I had never listened to this full album, and had presumed it was kind of Lynne-thin, production-wise. Wrong!

@RickClassic1980@alangura@mtnbiker429@JohnAPage@Waynthurson@KerryLauerman@sicklecow@DougieOh@MisterJEET@Alaska_Atoms How many of these songs had I never really heard before? Probably 10, at least half of which came from you fine people. Very fun to learn new stuff!2 replies 0 retweets 9 likesShow this thread -
Funny thing about April 1989. Know how like the two best albums that month by far were the Pixies’ Doolittle and Tom Petty’s Full Moon Fever? (Don’t argue, just nod.) Well, those disparate acts are connected by a song on this list: “Here Comes Your Man.”

If you think you’ve never heard of the Pixies, and if the word “debaser” to you means nothing special, you’ve probably still heard “Here Comes Your Man”—on a TV show, in a cab, at the bar & grill, whatever.https://youtu.be/tPgf_btTFlc

Do you know what the Pixies reportedly called that song within the band (and with not a small amount of derision)? “The Tom Petty song.” That’s because it was a straight-ahead catchy rocker. AND WE CAN’T HAVE THAT IN AN INDIE BAND. Oh, Gen X....

According to Wikipedia (must be true!), Black Francis wrote the song in high school, and from then on basically everyone was all, “Oh, record/play THAT, please!” And they were all, Nah man, we’re not SELLOUTS, c’mon.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Here_Comes_Your_Man …

I suspect people under the age of 40, maybe 35, don’t even begin to understand this attitude, but it was baked via nuclear ovens into Gen X music culture, and probably much else besides. Fatal flaw, saving grace…we’re still trying to figure it out.

I lived through it and it never made any sense to me.
