The dirty secret of the Northeast & Continental Europe is that the likeliest explanation for people eventually taking the lockdowns seriously was not their political leaders or ideological priors but seeing their neighbors die in heaps around them.

Here in Massachusetts, I don't personally know anyone who has caught (or died from) COVID-19. But we believe in community and the social contract. We wear masks in public and practice social distancing.

... y'all also had the 4th most deaths per capita of any state... https://www.statista.com/statistics/1109011/coronavirus-covid19-death-rates-us-by-state/ …

I think you're proving my point, right? Massachusetts can have both (a) the 4th highest number of deaths per capita and (b) not have "bodies piling up in the streets."

I'm super confused. I think "piling up in the streets" wasn't meant to be literal. And if the social contract and community are what "served" you during that time, seems like the results would indict whatever that means?

I think this is what Dan is referring to. The North East learned to take it seriously the hard way. https://www.google.com/amp/s/nypost.com/2020/04/27/nearly-half-of-nyc-residents-know-a-covid-19-victim-poll-says/amp/ …

I think NYC's experience has affected us all! But in MA, public schools closed on March 15, before NYC's case numbers took off.pic.twitter.com/EXyqeQEbyn

The atmosphere here in NY was just then descending into paranoia. I retrieved my daughter on the 14th when her college in MA closed, & my last day in the office in Manhattan was the 16th.

I also felt that paranoia and found it terrifying. I thought I might have to drive to VA to pick up my daughter from college. And of course Italy's death count was rising. Everyone I know took COVID seriously well before they knew anyone who was affected.
