Arthur was elected as Vice President with Garfield. Ford was not elected to Vice President nor to President.

I think the idea is that Arthur had never held any elective office prior to being VP, and “in his own” is intended to exclude VP.

I don’t know about that. Unlike the other contenders, she’s basically a blank slate on democratic policy. Her foreign policy chops are a reason to have her on the ticket, but also her greatest liability in light of Obama’s fairly underwhelming foreign policy record.
