The "rule" that's being described here is "a party can do whatever it legally has the power to do." That's obviously true, but also there's no point in pretending it's a principled rule. They should just admit this and stop pretending.

Right. Both presidential & Senate races do. POTUS wins, typically, but when the clock is running down, not so much.
