Isn't it just transparently obvious that a lame duck president and lame duck senate, both potentially to be replaced by the other party, appointing a SCOTUS nominee will open the door to court packing and other major judicial reforms? As you say, this hasnt happened in centuries

Court packing failed when FDR tried it. The president and congress aren’t “lame” until 11/5 - probably 11/25 with mail in counting.
