Plenty of conservative policies are partly (school choice) or wholly (pro-life) altruistic. And conservatives have certainly responded & changed policies in response to external conditions.

I know that I for one have moved around on trade and private-sector union issues in large part because I found over time that the positions I'd grandfathered myself into didn't match with the reality I was seeing on the ground. Can't speak for Dan, but that was a real evolution.

I've come around on several of the law enforcement reform issues, and not because it was a thing affecting me or people in our movement.

I wish I had the receipts but it's before the social media era but I've been there on crimlaw since even before I went to law school and became a lawyer but was an unapologetic conservative, pretty much always have been.

One I definitely went from a big fan to a skeptic was civil asset forfeiture. I don't want it abolished, but its use should be a lot more restricted.

oh no let's just abolish it outright, we can find some other workaround if needed.

one of the very, very few places where I think that a big massive rip-down-the-walls change actually makes sense is on civil asset forfeiture. its abuse is just simply too obvious to ignore anymore. yes i know there are big drug dealers. but mostly you're hitting urban poor folks

I think it’s a terribly unjust policy on balance, even if sometimes it isn’t.

I'd limit it to the bigger fish.
