I don’t think that’s quite true. I think without some bad seeds, the pressure for Collins and others to acquit Trump would have been less present and the political incentives would have been totally different. I don’t think Collins is a Trumper.

Frankly, most of what I find alarming about Trump is attitudes & practices he imported from the other party. I want that stuff out of my party. Joining the other side would be endorsing it all, permanently.

Rs could have easily gotten themselves a new leader a few months ago, and could have made sure the current one would never be a serious problem again by disqualifying him from ever seeking federal office in the future. They instead chose to stick with this one.

Fair, but I think the current GOP philosophy is solely “own the libs with lower taxes and more talk about abortion”. But mainly “own the libs”. The way they ran from free trade appalls me. And the way the up and comers ignore covid science appalls me.
