    Today, in 1863, with Pickett's charge at Gettysburg and Pemberton's offer of surrender at Vicksburg, the Union Army carried the crucial swing states of Pennsylvania and Mississippi. The war was not over, but the Confederacy could no longer carry it by military means.

        Bad news for the POWs on both sides though, as Lincoln refused the truce for prisoner exchange, so they had another almost 2 years to try to survive.

        Meade always criticized for not finishing off Lee's army. Easier said than done - Meade had lost 25%-30% of his forces as well as a lot of battlefield leaders. Still, had he pushed a little harder he could have trapped Lee at the rain swollen Potomac.

        twenty years ago stood at little round top where Chamberlin held the flank, with my son. We also ran Pickett's Charge in the July heat. Realize how fragile the Union Victory was and how impossible the charge proved to be. (I had poison ivy rash after all this!).

        Over the past 5-10 years the Park Service has done a great job restoring the battlefield to how it looked in 1863. The view from Little Round Top is very different now than it was in past decades.

        Gettyburg did more than 'call PA' for the Union. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia lost 35% of its strength at Gettysburg and lost ability to stage any strategic offensive action for the rest of the war.
