It’s not about stopping them. It’s about people like you having the courage and moral integrity to draw the clear normative distinctions that you chastise the left for lacking. FFS, @DouthatNYT just did this very thing! It’s about you doing the right thing.

Just for the record, you want Stone Mountain sandblasted, right?

Of course. You don’t?! It was only constructed to oppose the CivilRights Movement! And that’s fine with you? Did the Germans construct a mountain memorial to Hitler, Goebbels and Goering in 2010?! Listen to yourself.

And you were with the Taliban on the Buddhas, right?

No, of course not. But right—let’s compare the symbols of the Confederacy to Buddha’s. And you have the presumption to lecture other Americans about public memoriaks when you don’t even have the decency and guts to renounce Jefferson Davis and Fort Bragg in 2020?! For shame.

On what principle would you oppose that? You've just forfeited the claim that either history or art counts for anything whatever, or that the consequences can be considered.

Lol. “History” to you = sustaining totems to a slaveocracy. And then you lecture the rest of us with your précis about Lincoln and Grant and Douglass? Honestly—just stick to your pre 1937 jurisprudence. Did you defend the statue of Saddam? Oh you didn’t?

You've yet to answer any of my questions or indicate any statute you'd oppose your own side ripping down.

Are you fucking kidding?!?! Did you not see the tweets I put here? “My side”? That’s only way you can even think. Because you lack any fundamental sense of racial justice and humanity. So it’s either defend “your side”—Stone Mt built to defend Jim Crow! Or attack “my side.”

You’re exposed. Fine. Just write about something else in order to defend “your side.” Don’t talk to Americans about public memory. Confederate leaders in 2020. Names on military bases (!) Really tough call, Dan. Wouldn’t want to get ahead of “the movement” on that one.

Active military bases are a distinct issue from statues. You still haven't answered my question about whether, if you thought tearing down all the statues would make things worse, you'd support it anyway. I assume yes.
