A comprehensive and devastating take-down by @baseballcrank of another historically illiterate argument at the Times Yes, Lincoln and the Union Freed the Slaveshttps://www.nationalreview.com/2020/06/yes-lincoln-and-the-union-freed-the-slaves/ …

Bouie pulled 2 quotes from the Sinha book: one from page 1 of the introduction, one from page 2. Book doesn't actually address emancipation except in a summary page at the end. You should read the Paulus book. And Richard Newman's book on abolitionism. and McPherson & Wilentz,

      2. I love the way he writes that Garrison would have been irrelevant without Garrisonians like Phillip's and for a long time Douglass. He says abolition was an irrelevant minority movement. Yeah if you also dont count women and blacks in the north?

Irrelevant? No. Marginal. There's a difference. Second-wave abolitionists were on the margins of American politics until they joined forces with the Free Soil movement. (Women didn't vote, & black Americans in the north did not always have the right to, either.)

The free soil party and the Republican were essentially founded by abolitionists, Chase Sumner et al and we need to have a more capacious understanding of politics than just electoral politics. Eventually though women and blacks also influenced the rise of antislavery politics.

Speaking of politics being about more than just elections: @baseballcrank, that pretty much summarizes scholarship from the last half century on colonial British America, the Revolution, and the early Republic.

The whole point of how we got to the American Revolution is that Americans could not channel politics into representation. Where electoral politics matters greatly is asking why elected governments did things with government power.

No, the whole point of the revolution was that the colonials were mad because the crown expected them to pay for their own defense and, most importantly, banned English settlement beyond the crest of the Appalachians. How dare he!

Someday - and today, plainly, will not be that day - I sincerely hope someone succeeds in teaching you that assertion is not argument, ad hominem is not evidence, self-regard is not expertise, & repetition does not improve a weak case.
