Unfortunately, the people attacking the monuments don't distinguish between the Confederates & the Union. And their intellectual leaders are hellbent on discrediting Lincoln, Grant, & their ideas.https://twitter.com/DavidAFrench/status/1275253935897542656 …

Local governments should decide the fate of monuments, not mobs. That's civil society 101. But here's my monument idea. Build more. We don't suffer from an excess of historical knowledge or memory. Give the Union soldier his rightful honor in the land he fought for. /1

Your first sentence is questionable. Your second sentence is mostly wrong, too. But that’s neither here nor there: like David French, then it’s upon *you* to draw that distinction for your readers in an *operational* way: the traitors of the slaveocracy do not merit our honor.

Basically your view is as follows, “There is a profound distinction between honoring Confederate leaders—traitors on behalf of a grotesque, evil cause whom we honor *only* for just—and other racist Americans whom we honor *despite* that. But I choose to be indiscriminate anyway.”

The political conditions in which it would be possible to create a grand bargain that distinguishes the two do not exist.

In small part because writers like you won’t even propose it. In fact, everybody but a small handful of people left of center would support it. You think rightwing gun nuts intimidating legislatures represent hardly anybody, but people who pull down statues are a mass movement.

Look all around you at who actually runs the campuses, the newspapers - you're saying that, say, James Bennet could whip his staff into line to back this.

Hardly anybody needs to be whipped into line—it’s an obvious limiting principle that most people see anyway. But leave that to the side—what does have to do with *your* view? Since when are you shy about your moral outrage and sense of justice? You’re a writer—take a stand.

"Hardly anybody needs to be whipped into line" - so, why aren't more mayors and governors stepping up to put a forceful stop to mob action? If it's so easy, why not do it?

You want to stay with any and every excuse to evade, after 155 years, is the right and just position, ie, to make *exactly* the moral/intellectual/political distinction that clarifies the matter as public policy. But you won’t. That decision is yours, not guvs/mayors/left.

distinction they did. You know exactly the difference and you can denounce the left to your heart’s content. But you cannot do that with *any moral/political/intellectual authority at all* unless you first distinguish honoring the Slaveocracy’s totems from other monuments.
