I typically don't capitalize either, but black Americans are an ethnicity, like Italian Americans - a group w/a distinct history, culture, & sense of identity; white Americans (like "people of color") aren't, but are an amalgamation of ethnicities defined only by who they aren't.https://twitter.com/AsteadWesley/status/1274560537523781633 …

I have been following the capitalization debates and I understand the arguments for capitalizing both Black and White or neither black or white but Black and not white is yet to make sense to me (yet seems to be the growing consensus?) https://twitter.com/eveewing/status/1274549596363149314 …

Of course, black Americans are originally composed of people from multiple African nationalities & tribes, but then, you can lift the hood on the historical background of a lot of ethnicities & say that. New peoples can be created by a common history together.

“black” “white” was never directly associated with a country’s flag. Very generic hence the lowercase. Whereas Italian-American, Mexican-American, etc leaves no doubt of the country with the distinct flag

"New peoples can be created by a common history together." You mean like the white Americans you just said weren't an ethnicity?

So.. "White" should be capitalized by your own logic.

Which would also apply, if true, to White Americans. It's both or neither, and any attempt to justify one over the other is intentionally obtuse.

So what's the case for capitalizing "brown" then? "Brown" covers even more diverse groups than "white" does. And how does the fact that style guide changes capitalizing both terms are paired together affect your assessment of the intent behind these changes?

Furthermore, current trends in identity politics will eventually force "Whites" to self-identify as an ethnic group in opposition to "Blacks" and "Browns." AND THAT IS *NOT* A GOOD THING. Identity politics are contrary to individual liberty and destructive to a liberal society.

Is there anywhere else in the world you go where your ethnicity is appended to your nationality? In Italy are there African-Italians? Does Sweden have Mexican or Hispanic-Swedes? Black-Russians (drinks aside)? Irish-Chinese? Angelo-Fijians?

Yeah, I'm a retired English and history teacher and I'd go with Black and white for those reasons. Using "white" as if the word describes a unified ethnicity is part of our problem in discussing racism. Funny how White Supremists and BLM both agree that it's a thing.
