Of course, black Americans are originally composed of people from multiple African nationalities & tribes, but then, you can lift the hood on the historical background of a lot of ethnicities & say that. New peoples can be created by a common history together.

Is black a race or ethnicity? The capitalization has confused me. Black people have many different ethnicities like white people or Asians. I understand why they made the change, but it pushes the idea that black people are monolithic when they have rich cultures.

Race is not actually a real thing distinct from ethnicity, except to the extent that it is perceived as a real thing. Until the Nazis, it was common to say "race" to mean any ethnicity - the French race, the Polish race, etc. The descendants of slaves are a distinct ethnicity.

No. There are distinct ethnic groups in the US. By race, I’m white. However, I’m Cajun. This is a recognized ethnic minority. We have a different language, culture & distinct genetics.

Identity is as much based in what a group isn't as much as what it is

You’re capitalizing because they are choosing Black as their identity, and that’s reasonable. (It used to be African American, but I guess that not in vogue) So I choose White as my identity, and I expect you to give me the same respect.

If I were to wade into this debate... I’d wonder if the more assimilative nature of the white identity matters. Lighter skinned Hispanics, Middle Easterners born in the US? White.
