Jefferson wrote the first federal ban on slavery (in the Northwest Territory; his words were later incorporated in the 13th Amendment) & signed into law the end of the slave trade. His record on slavery was hardly one-sided.https://twitter.com/joshrobin/status/1273744246747643904 …

Speaker of NYC Council and other council members calling for removal of Thomas Jefferson statue from chambers in City Hall. “The statue of this well-known slave owner is a reminder of the injustices that have plagued communities of color since the inception of our country.”

Jefferson was a terrible hypocrite with a really complicated legacy on many issues, & he left us a lot of mischief. But he did so many great things, & he's essential to the American Founding.

He threw blame of the slave trade at the feet of King George III in the original draft of the Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately the southern colonies didn’t want that language in there.

What do you think Thomas Jefferson's place is in American history (if any)? You think essentially erase him from the books/statues/memorials...or is there another response. Serious question.

Jefferson also wanted to damn the British King in the Declaration over to use of slavery but was talked out of it--imagine if how our country would have been affected if a direct anti slavery statement was in its founding document

The litmus test for these type of issues of public tribute to historical figures should be whether the subject in question had an overall positive contribution to our nation's development. It's a standard that Jefferson passes while Robert E Lee & other confederates clearly fail.
