Jefferson was a terrible hypocrite with a really complicated legacy on many issues, & he left us a lot of mischief. But he did so many great things, & he's essential to the American Founding.

He threw blame of the slave trade at the feet of King George III in the original draft of the Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately the southern colonies didn’t want that language in there.

What do you think Thomas Jefferson's place is in American history (if any)? You think essentially erase him from the books/statues/memorials...or is there another response. Serious question.

Jefferson also wanted to damn the British King in the Declaration over to use of slavery but was talked out of it--imagine if how our country would have been affected if a direct anti slavery statement was in its founding document

The litmus test for these type of issues of public tribute to historical figures should be whether the subject in question had an overall positive contribution to our nation's development. It's a standard that Jefferson passes while Robert E Lee & other confederates clearly fail.
