The relatively low profile of Juneteenth in the NY area is in contrast to the many, many ethnic holidays celebrated here - everybody's seen the Puerto Rican Day celebrations, for example, or has heard of the West Indian Day parade. It's just more of a Southern thing.

GP NY state employees will be celebrating it tomorrow with their Cuomo gifted, taxpayer funded day off amidst the worst state budget shortfall of modern times.

I'm in my mid-40s and grew up in the midwest. I never heard of it until I moved to TX four years ago.

“Big deal” is pushing it. I grew up in Houston, a few miles from where Juneteenth started, and never saw evidence of Juneteenth beyond the thirty-second clip (if that) on the local news at the back end of the half hour.

Heck, I grew up in El Paso (3.9% African American in '17 and more than 80% hispanic) and they always had coverage of that holiday in the local paper. Don't get how some in East Texas missed it.....

I first heard about it when I was interning with a local newspaper in high school in the late ‘00s in suburban Florida. I’m actually surprised by the amount of people that are claiming it’s made up or that people are virtue signaling by claiming to know about it.
