The most consistently shocking thing about American government in the 21st century - a thing that would have legitimately shocked the Founders - is a deficit of the desire to exercise power.https://twitter.com/DouthatNYT/status/1272542065684099072 …

There's only one theory of the separation of powers you need to understand the American system: Power flows to branches of government that are capable of and interested in using it, and away from those that aren't.

That Article I is now a joke. Even yesterday Grassley said re the Gorsuch decision something like, 'Good I guess we don't have to do that.'

One of the consequences of the growth of government in the 20th century is that power and legitimacy have come to rest exclusively in the president. Congress abets or opposes the presidential agenda, but doesn't seek to establish one of its own -- and the executive departments

can easily circumvent Congress through administrative law. Have we no roundheads, only cavaliers?

When the goals are party preservation, personal re-election and individual celebrity...exercising institutional power to accomplish actual policy or protection of American institutions isn’t that appealing....

Absolutely. Case in point: when Congress abdicated their role, defending everything Obama did no matter how outrageous.

Easier to win re-election if you take no real positions. These people want to stay in DC for as long as possible, anything that raises their profile too high may risk that. Better to do nothing.

No. Our government just disguises the power that it actually weilds: The power to enrich itself.

Its always about trade offs. At some point the political risk outweighs the quest for power. Maybe not this particular glitch, but the Founders did anticipate glitches, in general. A constitutional convention can always be re-created; we can always go back to our roots.

It takes courage. The gig is so sweet and no one wants to lose anyway, so we elect firebrands who instantly start thinking about their next election. The 17th Amendment isn't blameless here, either.
