No figure in American history is more important to modern progressivism - its theories of governance, its intellectual stylings, its migration into the Democratic Party since 1912 - than Woodrow Wilson.https://twitter.com/janecoaston/status/1271462458658603008 …

This is just it: 1.) This is a clear proxy issue, a thing-adjacent fight 2.) Folks seem to think that many people are emotionally tied to the memories of Woodrow “I was a godawful president” Wilson and Robert Byrd then they actually are. https://twitter.com/swin24/status/1271460862591750151 …

If they weren't tied to Wilson and Byrd, why didn't they take the statues down while they were taking down the statues of other racists?

“Why didn’t the people I’m mad at for taking down statues take down more statues” is a fascinating argument.

It illustrates that none of this is about what it claims to be about.

What does? Statues of Woodrow Wilson have been removed from college campuses across the country and people have been calling for the renaming of buildings named for Wilson for years.

You’re projecting. The people who fight racism today understand that Wilson was a racist. But you stopped fighting racism when your reading about the Democratic Party in the early 20th century stopped.

So what are your views “about”? Hating the administrative state and various other things you ascribe to 20th century liberalism. So stick to that—you don’t care about his racism one way or the other. Yet we do. And also racism today.

No, you're just demanding that I fight racism in the particularly approved ways of the political left, which among other things I find to be frequently counterproductive to that task.

Ah. And how do you do it? Gonna even write a column opposing Trump, Hawley and Cotton re changing the names of military bases so that they are not identified with slaveowning traitors 155 years after the Civil War ended? That’s an easy one. Maybe start your “fight” there.

Moreover, your central conceit here—Dems or liberals or leftists (not really clear whom) actually are apologizing to this day for Wilson’s racism is either cynical, stupid or ignorant. Do you really not know the modern historiography re Wilson?
