I used to believe I was a Meyer style fusionist, but I no longer feel connected to conservatives. The ones I do still feel a kinship with were always trying to conserve classical liberalism. The others have shown who they are.

I've spent an inordinate amount of time lately with Lincoln & Grant, so I appreciate that the GOP from its birth was fusionist. But the classical liberals of that era were right a lot more than the conservatives of the day were.

Well, classical liberalism meant something different by his time - it meant preserving the American tradition, but it also meant a more democratic society than the one of the Founders.
