Riots are the immediate problem, requiring an immediate solution. Policing issues are a hot topic now, but they also require a longer, more sustained policy debate than restoring order.https://twitter.com/AlanLevinovitz/status/1268367952509898753 …

These are all bad. Full stop. But I think reasonable people are actually saying this: If you and “your side” are tweeting/writing/worrying *more* about these than the problem of police brutality or racism, if they occupy *more* of your (finite) time and energy, that’s bad. https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1268365525563985921 …

Part of solving the rioting problem involves broader Qs about state use of force, the projection of goodwill by officials on long term change to policing, etc. Trying to turn this into two easily separable issues is another example of counterproductive oversimplification.

No, riots just need to be stopped. The long term thing is about preventing the next riot, not ending this one.

There is no such thing as “just stopped.” Stopped how? At what cost? With what consequences for the American people’s trust in the use of state force? “Just stopped” is a convenient fiction that avoids these Qs. “Just stopped” is license for short term abuse of power.

Well, really how far are you willing to go to prove a point? State endorsed murder and assault isn't bad enough to fight against? There is no opposing country in civil war. Additionally, dig deeper. Its NOT the protesters doing all that senseless violence, its THE Cops.

Would you be willing to overlook an American Tianenmen Square? Maybe some mass protester graves? How about some nice safe and civilised gas Chambers? People don't riot for no reason.
