Riots are the immediate problem, requiring an immediate solution. Policing issues are a hot topic now, but they also require a longer, more sustained policy debate than restoring order.https://twitter.com/AlanLevinovitz/status/1268367952509898753 …

These are all bad. Full stop. But I think reasonable people are actually saying this: If you and “your side” are tweeting/writing/worrying *more* about these than the problem of police brutality or racism, if they occupy *more* of your (finite) time and energy, that’s bad. https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1268365525563985921 …

Well, the problem is government's policy is increasingly based on media, so the argument is that disproportionately covering the "bad" of either side - i.e. law enforcement or protestors - is not what's needed. And should be called out.

Part of solving the rioting problem involves broader Qs about state use of force, the projection of goodwill by officials on long term change to policing, etc. Trying to turn this into two easily separable issues is another example of counterproductive oversimplification.

No, riots just need to be stopped. The long term thing is about preventing the next riot, not ending this one.

People are rioting because heavily armed police are shooting tear gas at people who are standing on their front porches. Makes it hard to stop the protests with...the reason people are angry.

Yes...but the concern that urgency will dissipate and interest will be lost before that debate is concluded and policies are enacted is legitimate.

Alternatively, you have no shot at reforming police departments and improving race relations if you don't stop rioting looting and destruction of property
