Can anyone explain to me why Elmer Valo (1940-1961) was always fighting for playing time? He had some of the best strikeout/walk ratios ever, had a .400 on base percentage 7 straight years, career OBP of .398 (!!), but only one season of more than 133 games/459 at bats.

Neither here nor there, but Elmer Valo was the favorite player of one of my uncles. An eccentric choice for a NYer.
