"Modern"? Lincoln sent combat troops straight from the Gettysburg battlefield in July 1863 to New York to crush the anti-draft/anti-black riots. They shot dozens of people. Coolidge made his name as a "law and order" guy calling out the guard when the Boston cops went on strike.https://twitter.com/bubbaprog/status/1266396730440011776 …

105 people were killed in the 1863 draft riots (which, predictably, failed). 11 black people were lynched; 8 soldiers & 2 cops were killed. The rest were rioters.

When Coolidge called out the state guard to stop riots during the Boston police strike, they mounted machine guns at the police stations.

Now, as a police officer, at the tip of the spear, should you shoot looters? No. But if you can convince looters that you just might shoot them for looting, you'll get a lot less looting in a hurry.

Trump is not a “law and order” Republican or of any kind. He is bully and an agitator who throws red meat to his low information followers. He isn’t advocating L&O he is agitating for more violence. He would burn down the Reichstag if he could figure out how to light a match.
