105 people were killed in the 1863 draft riots (which, predictably, failed). 11 black people were lynched; 8 soldiers & 2 cops were killed. The rest were rioters.

Now, as a police officer, at the tip of the spear, should you shoot looters? No. But if you can convince looters that you just might shoot them for looting, you'll get a lot less looting in a hurry.

There was a reasonable path for Coolidge to be at the top of the ticket, but it didn’t pan out quite perfectly.
