Point 4 is something I’ve said for a long time. Bloated crime, vehicle, and other codes are the fault of “we have to do something” legislatures. These laws provide cops with broad discretion in stopping people for minor, stupid things, and then it escalates.

'when you choose to make one category of violent deaths matter more than any other' has issues. Say someone was early released from Prison due to COVID scares. He then kills someone. The early release is relevant. Just like the "illegal" part of the immigrant is relevant.

Many good points in this piece incl how it (indirectly) distinguishes the Hong Kong protests, e.g. "an individual, local act of violence [in Minneapolis &] a national, public argument [in Hong Kong].. are two different categories of thing". Floyd didn't really encounter a policy
