This is a good Memorial Day to remember that people like Victor Davis Hanson and various other Trumpers have compared Trump to heroes like George Patton.

Patton was a great general, but would probably have been a terrible president.

I'm not the guy making the comparison. I think Patton (to judge from D'Este book) is, um, problematic in a lot of ways, but Trump and Patton are not from the same universe of men.

Truth. I really think the closest historical figure to Trump is Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Nah. Johnson was, for all his many flaws (racism being the obvious one, as well as being consumed by his resentments more broadly), an immensely tough, brave & stubborn man of principle. Had Lincoln lived, we'd remember Johnson as a hero.

In so much as you’re saying it’s hard to be as virtueless as Trump, I’ll stipulate to that.

Both Wilhelm and Johnson were louts, but neither can approach Trump's level of pure, empty stupidity. Each of them read at least one book.

So much about Wilhelm's personality was the same as Trump's. He wasn't a tyrant, but he was a buffoon, obsessed with image & publicity, impulsive, apt to pick up strange ideas & run with them.

That's Trump to a "T", so Wilhelm it is.
