Patton was a great general, but would probably have been a terrible president.
Don't disagree with any of this. My point is, Johnson had some important virtues, & in different historical circumstances, those would have outweighed his sins. In the life he actually lived, they did not.

....yes, he was not without attributes and, when you squint in just the right way, pathos.
@agordonreed captures that in her biography. But, in the end, he was Lincoln’s worst decision—the one he couldn’t fix—even as he seemed like a perfect political choice at the time. -
