"Trump shut down the economy for no reason" is a bold strategy, Cotton. https://twitter.com/Zac_Petkanas/status/1262031744074563584 …

It's also hilarious that the DNC calls the economy in February 2020 "the Obama/Biden economy" when they spent 8 years arguing that it was still the Bush economy while Obama was in office.

All that being said, obviously as a matter of practical politics, the narrative of "Rs can talk about a good economy, Ds have to explain" is better for Rs, while "Ds can talk about a bad economy, Rs have to explain" is better for Ds. This is why Trump is in real trouble.

This is why red states have to open up. Let red states economy flourish while blue states refuse to let people go to work.

Trump is in no trouble at all from this kind of thinking. People in 90% of the country have had enough of stay-at-home and become destitute orders. When even Southern Californians and New Yorkers are ignoring the orders you know the economy will recover.

"Things are good, and they've improved with me in charge. Keep me in charge to keep things this way." is traditionally a much more compelling argument than "Things are bad, and they've become bad with me in charge. It's not my fault, and I need more time to fix them"

counter argument: When the virus hit the economy was at its best position in years. The Obama/Biden economy was stagnant his whole term in office. Do you really trust Biden to get it back to where it was?

And the "good" economy that Republicans want to claim was 2% GDP growth and a manufacturing recession.

OTOH if the D agenda was gonna damage a strong economy why would you impose it on a weaker one?

And it is up to people like you and me to explain that it was the state governors (starting with 19 of 24 Democrat and only 5 of 26 on March 17th) who shutdown their states economies. Not Trump. Will you do that? Unh-uh.

I am not sure typical conventional wisdom applies in this case. What is going to matter most is who seems most responsible for the shutdowns by November because it is they who will face a backlash. So far, the swing state environments seem to favor Trump.
