Yes, and ironically for much of the 1850s they got doughface Democrats there anyway. Point is that they gave up more than they got in return.
But they didn’t give anything up, or gain anything. Neither the North nor the South gave up or gained anything- they simply postponed open warfare (but not open conflict) in newly emerging states. It didn’t work, because there was no possible compromise. No side gained or lost.
