Which is related to the fact that we do not actually have - and haven't had, since 1786 - a states' rights system of government. We have a federalist system, in which states have powers, but they are limited when they collide with those of other states.
The slave states were completely hypocritical on the fugitive slave act. Ask yourself a simple question: what part of the constitution allows the federal government to get into the slave catching business? None.
Furthermore, it was so flagrantly unconstitutional. They set up a system of commissioners to determine who was a slave and who wasn’t. The accused slave had no right to be heard whatsoever and could be declared a slave based on nothing more than an affidavit
