Even if you intend to suck it up and pull the lever because of the other guy and/or his party being terrible, it should concern you if you're voting for Biden, or for Trump, that when the election's, over, the guy will be president & be mentally & morally unfit for the job.

A presidential election *is* a binary choice, in terms of its likely outcome, so "compare the two options" is a legitimate argument. But it is no excuse for just refusing to consider a candidate's glaring flaws.

The ultimate question is whether one candidate winning is better/worse than the other candidate winning. A third party/protest vote is a statement that both options are equally good/bad/intolerable. But the question is comparative. Not just "the other guy is bad."

Not to pick on any of these responses individually, but they neatly illustrate how different people process what goes into the voting decision differently.pic.twitter.com/sXRLcW2uZH

I would bet big money that we've had presidents before with "glaring flaws." The difference between then & now? We didn't always have a 24-hour news cycle or reporters who spent more time trying to dig up dirt than on reporting the actual news.

It's not a binary choice. So many people submitting the mindset it is leads to unfit candidates. I'd rather vote for someone competent that may lose than throw my vote away on an unfit candidate that will damage the country just because they're from one of the major parties.

If reflections on the binary choice lead us to recoil, there should be room to reconsider the options before they've even been officially chosen.

I always feel my duty as a citizen is to select the best person for the job. Not to worry about other people's choices. I think if everyone acted as such, we'd be better off. But I can't advocate for something I'm not willing to do myself. So I never worry about winning.

Agreed. The thing is, it's only binary because we all think/say it's binary. If everyone believed that it wasn't binary, it wouldn't be. It's a frustrating self-fulfilling prophecy.

Dan, I'm lost as to who your intended audience is for this. The partisans of the electorate, which is about 80% of it, aren't going to do that, and the other 20% know pretty well how flawed these guys are. Who's left?

A vote for a candidate is not an endorsement of his/her style or personal life. For me, it is a calculated judgment of which will more likely move the nation in a direction that I approve. SCOTUS is an overriding factor; there is a huuuge gulf between the likely outcomes, R vs D.
