Lincoln would have been no fan of Trump. But: in 1848, "Conscience Whigs" like Charles Sumner bolted the Whigs on principle bc Zachary Taylor was a slaveholder, went third-party (Free Soil). Salmon Chase was a Free Soiler. Lincoln & Seward stuck with their party & backed Taylor.https://twitter.com/BillKristol/status/1257655265849155586 …

Would Abraham Lincoln have been friendlier to the Lincoln Project, or to Donald Trump?

Also, Taylor in office turned out to be much better for opponents of slavery than predicted, because the Democrats radicalized him with their pro-slavery extremism. He even grew to hate Jefferson Davis, who had been his son-in-law.

Sumner also got beaten by a cane on the Seante floor.

Lincoln either gets elected governor of his *presumably R leaning* state and spends his time governing away from national politics ala Ducey or DeWine or if he’s in congress functions as a general party vote who focuses on small business legislation and supporting dissidents

Lincoln’s rise to power is a classic example of “this guy is the generic Republican with no enemies and he’s well spoken with a good life story. Gold Jerry, Gold!”

He's our greatest president. But it's hard enough figuring out what Lincoln actually believed in his own time, let alone divining what he would think in ours.

Washington > Lincoln and honestly it isn't close. I have no problem with ranking Lincoln #2, he was an extremely important historical leader. But it's just silly to put him above Washington.

Lincoln would've been a whole lot friendlier to Trump then a group of people whose only motivating principle seems to be bombing muslims and tax cuts.
