No country can continue to exist as a functioning polity without a shared philosophy, culture, and history. The 1619 Project is a dagger aimed at the heart of all three.

Are you arguing that a house divided against itself can, in fact, stand?

I'm not, but post Civil War, America managed to continue along even though the South continued to reject the "philosophy" of the side that won. Indeed, it took another 100 years before a semi-consensus on race was achieved. So, Ben's post doesn't hold up.

There is no way to argue any position on this question in 280 characters that won't get riddled with caveats, but the fundamental fact is that you need a baseline of unity, which the antebellum America lost & shattered over, but the postbellum America gradually recovered.

Yep. You need lost cause history. You have to adopt the southern myth of nobility. In this world, falsified history is better than the truth.

I mean—“facts don’t care about your feelings” is gone here. Because Ben doesn’t share a culture or history with many, say, South Texans. Or even Southern Californians, where he lives. So those folks just get written out of Ben’s history.

Lincoln's vision was of a nation founded on ideals that could, over time, be made accessible to all. You can believe Lincoln, or believe the 1619 Project's factually false view of the American Founding. Not both. Pick one.

You do know Lincoln was assassinated right after the Civil War? So you hold him responsible for the postwar promises broken by Democrats?

Lincoln did not care about slaves. Freeing slaves was a tactic to get slaves to rebel and disrupt the south. There is literally a quote of him saying if he could save the union without freeing slaves he would. Northern states with slaves were given a free pass..

His complete thought was that saving the Union was his priority, and if he could do that by saving no slaves, some, or all, he would. He believed that carrying our founding ideals to their logical conclusions would doom slavery eventually anyway.
