Two points: 1) negative payroll taxes do not help those who have lost their jobs, and may still not be enough to make working more attractive. 2) Hopefully, workers are keeping in mind their insurance costs, because COBRA is expensive.

True on (1), but cuttting the number of unemployed would reduce the strain on the unemployment system, too.

Steve Mnuchin was asked about this scenario (workers would rather stay home) at a press conference and assured everyone this would never happen. I remember it’s specifically because I literally said out loud this was totally out of touch with reality!

This story is BS, and, once again if you had any inkling of how unemployment works you would know that. They report that the owner wanted to keep the employees working but the unemployment benefits were just too attractive so they opted for that instead. That’s not their choice
-
If they voluntarily leave a job, they are not eligible for unemployment. Period. This whole Conservative idea that this relief is a perverse incentive is founded on this same lack of understanding.

I wrote a paper in gas school about replacing SSA with a negative income tax. Fortunate no one found it when I was running for Congress - I might have lost by 40 points (instead of 20).

This is short-term and there is a social benefit to more people staying home. The more people that stay home during this time, the fewer people will contract and spread the virus. This isn't (hopefully) a forever change that will not incentive work. We need people home right now.

I wouldn’t define short term as thru 6/30, which is what this does. If small businesses can’t open well before 6/30 then there won’t be jobs come 7/1 for the unemployed to come back to & there will be more unemployed as professional firms have just started pay cuts and layoffs.
