Maybe it's because I'm a Navy guy, but the slow sections are necessary. Life at sea is weeks of waiting periodically interrupted by minutes of panic.

It sold 3,000 copies in the 40 years between its 1851 publication & Melville's death. Its failure convinced him to give up on being a novelist. On the centenary of his birth, the NY Public Library's copy was discovered to be still unopened, its pages still stitched together.
