The first black members of Congress took office in 1870. The first black member of Congress outside the old Confederacy took office in 1929. The first black Democrat in Congress took office in 1935. The first black Democratic Senator took office in 1993.

My childhood ward was an exception...a mix of white ethnicities pre-1960, and majority-minority since 1980. Our US Reps for my entire life have been Jewish, as were at least 2 Aldermen. Yet oddly, we didn’t get our first African-American Alderman until last year. M
